At a difficult moment in her life, having just lost her mom, Jane Myers found an unexpected lifeline: an invitation to write birthday cards.
“My mom’s faith was a beautiful road map for me. Sitting in church and reading the call for volunteers to write birthday cards, I thought of her and said to myself, ‘I can do that.’”
And she did. Today, Jane leads a small group of volunteers who gather on the third Tuesday of each month in the Commons to write birthday cards to parish members age 80 and older. Featuring pictures of the church, the cards are a simple way to reach out and remind members that they are remembered and loved. The group typically writes about 30-40 cards per month.
“It’s a way to make a big church feel small.”
It’s not just the joy sent through the mail, but Jane enjoys the community around the table too. “I leave most Tuesdays thinking ‘that was the best day.’”
Jane grew up in the Episcopal church and as a young person was draw to the verse Philippians 2:14-16 and recalls it as an encouragement to shine brightly for Christ. Each birthday card is an opportunity to do just that. Jane hopes that these cards are a reminder of Christ’s love and a moment of joy for all who write and receive them.
