Lisa Skinner thought she would forever be caught in the loop of apartments and renting. Home ownership seemed so out of reach. But today, she is preparing to move into her own home built by Christ Church volunteers through Habitat for Humanity.

“This house means stability for my family. It is generational care. My kids are going to know, whatever happens in their life, they can always come home,” Lisa shared.

The first time Lisa applied to Habitat she was denied. Looking back, she can see God’s hand. “I wasn’t ready or prepared for what it would mean for me to own a home. This time, I was ready.” Lisa even joked that despite liking to get her nails done regularly, she opted for a clear coat on her nails so she could go all in. “I never pictured myself with a hammer, and I was lifting wall panels!”

Lisa and her family are preparing to move in before her kids start their next school year. The kids are excited about their rooms. Lisa and her husband are already planning cookouts in the backyard.  For Lisa, this has been about much more than construction. Reflecting on her experience with our Habitat team, shared, “They brought me in as family. This wasn’t transactional. I haven’t met everyone at Christ Church yet, but I love them in advance.”
