Rama Road Elementary School Volunteers

Rama Road Elementary School, located in Southeast Charlotte, hosts approximately 550 students in grades PreK through 5th grade each year. Their motto is “Rama Proud and College Bound – Watch Us Shine!”  Their curriculum features project-based learning, global efforts, STEM, and student-centered classrooms and learning labs.

Ways to get involved:

The Augustine Literacy Project uses the Orton-Gillingham approach and Wilson Reading System® materials. Augustine tutors receive training during a five-day training class. To attend an Information Session to learn more or to complete an application please visit their website: alpcharlotte.org/tutor.

Heart Math Tutoring is a nonprofit that connects volunteers with students who are behind in elementary math and need foundational skills and confidence. Heart then pairs students with a tutor for 1 hour per week. For more information, contact: Daisha Delano, Tutor Operations Manager daisha.delano@heartmathtutoring.org.

Girl Scouts – Rama is intentional with the planning of many extra-curricular groups for their students to engage with in order to support the development of the whole child and provide leadership learning opportunities. One program is the Girl Scouts. Under the fearless leadership of Julie Stedman, Christ Church has led a Girl Scout Troop at Rama Road Elementary for over a decade.  Help us continue to have Girl Scouts as a possibility for these young children! For more information, contact Julie at julescs@aol.com to volunteer or ask questions.

Freedom School Partners – Reading is at the heart of the six-week summer Freedom School program. Partnering with the Children’s Defense Fund, Freedom School intentionally curates reading selections that reflect diverse cultural images and history. Scholars participate in dedicated reading times, building personal libraries, role-playing, group discussion, and creative writing. Volunteers can read with children, chaperone field trips, provide classroom assistance and more. For more information, contact Laura Konitzer at konitzerl@christchurchcharlotte.org.
