Lenten Devotional Study: The Spiritual Practice of Fasting

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? -Isaiah 58:6-7 (NRSV)

We often bring an intention of giving up something for Lent to prepare for Easter. Our practice models Jesus’ time in the desert fasting for 40 days. There are many different things we can fast from. Join us in the study of A Different Kind of Fast: Feeding Our True Hungers in Lent by Christine Valters Paintner. During this five-week study, we will be invited to consider and explore fasts for things such as multitasking and inattention, anxiety over scarcity, speed and rushing, and certainty.

We will meet on Mondays, March 10 through April 7 from 10 – 11 am in M206. Please get the book and bring it with you.

Our reading schedule for the five weeks is:
March 10 – Ash Wednesday and Week 1
March 17 – Week 2
March 24 – Week 3
March 31 – Week 4
April 7 – Week 5
Week 6 and Living it Forward will be read during Holy Week, but the group will not be meeting.

If you would like to participate, but can’t come each week, feel free to read the pages for the week(s) you can attend and come when you can. Your presence is valued.
