Men’s Mt. LeConte Hike and Retreat

Plans are underway once again to gather as a group to spend time together in God’s country. Men of all ages who are physically capable of hiking at an easy pace 8 miles to the summit of Mt. LeConte are invited. The cabins accommodate 20 men.

We typically meet for an evening meal in Cherokee the night before the hike. We take advantage of that time to get acquainted and share a thoughtful discussion presented informally by a member of the Christ Church clergy. It sets a theme to consider as we hike up the mountain the following day.

LeConte Lodge is a welcoming rustic group of cabins with a dining hall. We meet before the evening meal for discussion, then eat a hearty supper, and celebrate Compline together on the summit after the sun goes down. The cabins are heated but without electricity – light is provided by kerosene lanterns. Many get up early to watch the sunrise on Myrtle Point. We will have breakfast together, then hike back down the mountain.

The food is simple, the setting at 6,400 feet is refreshing, and the fellowship enriching. This hike has become a pilgrimage-like event for many of the participants who return yearly.
